RFTO 2011 - results!!!

What a great day! The sun was shining... we had no rain for the event (and no rain until late afternoon), and we had fun raising money for a great cause to support orphans abroad and at home.

This year we had one of our benefitting orphanages, Childrens Home of Hope in Ghana, and their founder, Elvis, start the race and hand out awards. As Elvis said, every step taken was another step toward feeding an orphan. That is why this race exists, to do something good with our passion for running.

Our first year with the 10K did have some hiccups in terms of course support, and I apologize for that and resolve that it will be much more organized and better supported next year. I think overall it was a success and a good addition to the race. We will continue with the 10K next year, as well as the 5K and 1 mile kids run.

Results are now available. Please see attached link below. If you had to leave after the race and, if you won your age group, and were not able to claim your trophy, let me know and we will sync up.

10K route and start time

We will be starting the 10K at the same time as the 5K, 9 am, on Saturday, May 7th, and both will start at the same point and loop around the school to start the race. The 5K route will loop the perimeter of the property before heading into the woods, while the 10K route will stay closer to the physical building and head into the woods before the 5K runners. The routes will be very nice. The 10K is two loops and runs through an adjacent neighborhood, while the 5K will be one loop.

Special Guest for Race Day

One of our benefiting orphanages, The Children's Home of Hope (in Ghana), will have their founder joining us and will sound the horn to start the race. Elvis has an amazing story. He was orphaned at 6 yrs old and was able to make his way through school because he would show up at his friends house for dinner, help with their homework and do homework with them, as he couldn’t afford the books on his own. He was given a job in the town to teach about AIDS, saw many children orphaned, and he found a house for these children, paid someone to stay with the children, and this is how the home was founded.

10K route update

The 10K route is in process of being re-designed, after consideration that three loops of Hudson Springs would be kind of difficult. We are looking at two loops of the park which would include a part that runs through a connecting neighborhood. We think we have figured it out. Will finalize in the next week. The course starts at Seton, loops the school parking lot, heads into Hudson Springs, includes a connecting part of the trail, then goes into a neighborhood and back onto the trail, loop that trail plus neighborhood twice and end back at Seton. It is a very scenic loop.

Orphans in Ghana and Honduras also benefit

In addition to the Children of Ubumi and Berea Children's Home, this race also benefits the Children's Home of Hope in Ghana and the Orphan's Prayer in Honduras.

Children benefit from the race

The Ubumi Transit Home, Hudson’s orphanage, is being sponsored by Seton Catholic School. It provides quality care, education, and spiritual and social services to 16-20 orphans in a home-like setting. Run by Ubumi Africa, a Zambian NGO, the orphanage staff attempts to locate and place orphaned or abandoned children with their extended families. Children whose families are unable to take them will grow up at the Home. Additionally, Ubumi Africa provides free schooling, counseling, nutrition and health programming for approximately 380 children and their families in the impoverished Musonda Compound, about 1 mile from the orphanage. The Ubumi Transit Home and the work of Ubumi Africa was adopted by the City of Hudson as its global outreach in April of 2009.

The Run also benefits Berea Children’s Home for those wishing to assist local needy children. Berea Children's Home & Family Services (BCHFS) was founded in 1864 to provide a home for children orphaned by the Civil War. Today, BCHFS still provides a home for children, but their continuum of care to over 11,200 children and families has evolved to include out of home programs, early childhood and parenting services, mental health services, employment programs, family counseling programs, and juvenile justice services.

Additionally, children in orphanages in Honduras and Ghana also are beneficiaries of the Run. Also, our own children in the race get a chance to exercise in nature and are fostered in their intuitive tender concern for others who are in need.
